The Reality of Building a Tech Career from Nepal
The constraints are real and so are the openings. An honest look at building an engineering career from Kathmandu.
The honest version includes both sides. Local salaries are lower than what the same work earns elsewhere, senior mentorship is thinner than the number of junior roles suggests, and payment infrastructure for international freelance work is more friction than it should be.
What has genuinely changed is distribution. Code review, documentation, open source, and client work are all remote-native now. A public repository and a written explanation of how you solved a problem travel the same distance from Kathmandu as from anywhere else.
What that rewards is visible output. Not credentials, not claimed years of experience, but work someone can open and read. Most of my opportunities have come from something that already existed in public before the conversation started.
It is slower than the optimistic version. Build things, write about what you learned, keep the work public, and give it years rather than months.
